BIG TECH STRUGGLES TO MONETIZE AI

Plus, schools worldwide embrace AI while US schools ban it

Big Tech Struggles to Monetize AI Technology

According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, major tech companies such as Microsoft and Google face challenges in turning AI hype into profitable ventures. These companies are investing heavily in developing AI tools, but the high costs associated with their development are staggering.

Industry experts suggest that one of the main obstacles is the lack of understanding among consumers about the true value of AI and its potential applications. As a result, companies are still looking for the right pricing strategy that would make AI products more appealing to potential buyers.

Danish Schools Welcome ChatGPT: A New Dawn for AI in Education

Danish high schools are adopting AI chatbot ChatGPT to enhance learning experiences, shifting the narrative from cheating concerns to constructive utilization. This initiative, led by English teacher Mette Mølgaard Pedersen, aims to transform student interaction with AI, nurturing a conducive learning environment. The program has garnered positive reactions from students, who appreciate ChatGPT’s instantaneous, precise responses, likening it to an evolved search engine. However, this adoption has also revived paper-based testing among some educators to maintain academic integrity, illustrating a balanced approach toward integrating AI in education.

Google’s AI Revolutionizes Traffic Lights, Boosts Efficiency and Reduces Emissions

Google’s AI-powered software is optimizing traffic lights in cities worldwide, resulting in decreased traffic congestion, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced carbon emissions. The technology analyzes data from Google Maps users, making timing adjustments at intersections and cutting as many as 30% of stops and 10% of emissions. The project, known as Green Light, is expanding to more cities and aims to promote environmental sustainability by providing real-world impact and reducing disturbances caused by traffic congestion.

Artificial Intelligence in the Entertainment Industry: Human vs Machine Writing

The Writers Guild of America has embraced AI in the creative process, leading to questions about its usefulness and potential impact on storytelling. To explore this, the Los Angeles Times compiled excerpts from both human and AI-written scripts to test if viewers can differentiate between the two. The article showcases examples from different genres, including a cop procedural, a dramedy, a historical romance, and a dystopian script. By analyzing these excerpts, viewers can assess the effectiveness of AI in generating ideas and contributing to the creative process.

The Emergence of AI Companions: A New Era in Computing

In the near future, we can expect a significant shift in our relationship with computers as virtual assistants transform into AI companions. While traditional assistants were primarily focused on completing tasks, AI companions will be more personal, familiar, and deeply integrated into our lives. Companies like Microsoft, Meta, and even start-ups are embracing this transition. The potential of AI companions lies in their ability to remember and understand our preferences, creating a sense of familiarity and intimacy.

These companions can proactively improve our lives by making connections and offering insights. While hardware innovations are expected to support AI companions, the core technology can already be implemented on existing devices. However, ethical questions regarding privacy, bias, and consent must be addressed as AI companions become an integral part of our lives.

Cybersecurity Firm Avast Exposes AI-Powered Tool Capable of Manipulating Users on Dating Apps

Cybersecurity company Avast has uncovered a sophisticated tool known as “LoveGPT” that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to build fake profiles and deceive unsuspecting users on popular dating apps. The tool, which runs on Windows machines and is coded in Visual Basic, has evolved over the years with additional functions and add-ons to defraud users more effectively.

Avast reports that the upgraded tool can create convincing profiles on multiple dating platforms, scrape users’ data, and manipulate victims through various channels. It also utilizes AI models, including OpenAI’s DaVinci and GPT-3.5 turbo LLMs, to generate interactions and messages. The revelation comes at a time when AI is increasingly being used in dating apps, with 20% of male users relying on AI to improve their dating prospects, according to a recent survey.

AI Language Models Uncover Speech Patterns in Schizophrenia Patients, Paving the Way for Improved Psychiatric Diagnosis

Scientists from UCL and the University of Oxford have utilized AI language models to analyze speech patterns in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. By training the AI on extensive internet text, the researchers found that it could predict word choices in control participants more accurately than in individuals with schizophrenia.

This innovative application of AI in psychiatric study holds the promise of a more nuanced, data-driven approach to diagnosing and understanding mental disorders. The team plans to further deploy this technology in broader patient samples and various speech settings to explore its efficacy in a clinical environment.
