AI-Generated “Scam Books” Flooding Amazon 

Amazon’s online bookstore is facing an influx of low-quality and misleading books produced using AI text generation. Unscrupulous operators create these “scam books” by feeding AI systems like ChatGPT with outlines or prompts, then publishing the auto-generated content under misleading titles and descriptions to appear valuable. Many are filled with nonsensical text, plagiarized passages or randomly stitched-together information scraped from the internet.  The AI books exploit Amazon’s self-publishing platform to cheaply pump out volumes that mimic legitimate titles on popular topics like coding, business, and test prep. 

Cognition’s AI Software Engineer Helps Developers Create Code

A startup called Cognition has unveiled an AI system aimed at assisting software developers in writing code. The AI, called Devin, functions like an AI pair programmer – able to understand natural language descriptions of desired programs and then generate the corresponding source code across dozens of programming languages. Devin can create full applications from scratch, integrate APIs, fix bugs, document code, and even explain its reasoning. Developers simply provide instructions and examples, with Devin handling the actual coding. While not intended to fully automate programming, Devin could significantly boost developer productivity while facilitating human-AI collaboration.

New research from the Institute for Work raises alarms about the potential negative impacts of AI and robotics on worker well-being and quality of life.
